John Clark Motor Group, one of Scotland’s largest family-owned automotive dealership networks, has announced its acquisition of Hawco Group, a well-respected Volkswagen Group franchised dealer with branches in Inverness, Elgin, and Peterhead. The deal marks a significant expansion of John Clark’s footprint in the Highlands and comes as part of Volkswagen Group’s broader network restructuring.
Chris Clark, Group Managing Director of John Clark Motor Group, expressed pride in welcoming Hawco Group into the business. He highlighted the shared commitment to customer care, heritage, and community between the two companies and looked forward to delivering a more comprehensive range of brands and services across Scotland.
Outgoing Managing Director John Hawco, whose family founded the business in 1953, said, “As Kevin and I move into retirement, we are confident the new owners, also a family-owned and values-led business, will continue to uphold the principles on which Hawco was built.” Hawco Group’s 200 staff will remain in place, with all branches operating from their current locations under the existing brands and teams – a continuity regarded as key by both parties.
Under John Clark Motor Group, Hawco’s customers will benefit from expanded central support services, including the group’s Customer Engagement Centre, Central Funding Unit, and Internal Transport Team. Enhanced digital purchase experiences, service plan options, and Motability specialisms will also be introduced.
The acquisition strengthens both businesses’ commitments to community involvement and environmental responsibility, with John Clark Motor Group maintaining its efforts toward reducing emissions and advancing renewable energy initiatives. Industry analysts have called the deal a strategic move that gives John Clark enhanced scale and dominance in northern Scotland, while Hawco’s founding family look forward to a well-earned retirement after over 70 years in the business.
